Law Society of England and Wales responded to the International Trade Committee inquiry on transparency and scrutiny of trade strategy and negotiations. The inquiry comes at a time when the UK begins establishing a post-Brexit trade regime.

In its response, the Law Society stressed that the development of new trade policy requires ’extensive engagement with a variety of stakeholder groups in order to maximise the amount of information on which the Government can base its decisions.’ It recalled the importance of the right balance between openness, transparency and the necessary freedom for manoeuvre for the policy makers. It also summarised its experience in trade policy engagement with the EU and WTO.
