The Law Society of Scotland has submitted comments to the House of Lords EU Internal Market Sub-Committee follow-up inquiry on trade in non-financial services, following the report it published in March 2017.
Among other points, the response highlights specific issues for the legal sector in leaving the EU. This is posited in terms of potential loss of participation in the internal market, most importantly the dedicated legal services framework; and loss of benefits in terms of civil and criminal justice cooperation. Also considered are the effects of trading with the EU in legal services on the basis of WTO commitments and what a negotiated UK-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would have to address in order to provide some reassurances to the legal sector.
